Mabel Todd\u2019s The Thinking Body<\/em> (1937) still stands today as the classic study of posture and movement that established many of the founding principles of somatic movement education.\u00a0 The book proposed an approach to \u201cstructural hygiene\u201d and \u201cbodily economy\u201d based on \u201cthe concurrent study of physics, mechanics, anatomy, and physiology.\u201d<\/h4>\n

The Thinking Body<\/em> expanded upon Todd\u2019s 1929 college syllabus, The Balancing of Forces in the Human Being, <\/em>\u00a0which set forth the human \u201cpsycho-physical mechanism involved in the organic reaction to the problem of resisting gravity in the upright position.\u201d\u00a0 Throughout her career, Todd refused to codify her educational method in order to \u201cprevent the premature appearance of a \u2018school\u2019 or \u2018system\u2019 which so often spells the end of creative processes.\u201d\u00a0 In the late 1970s,\u00a0 the term Ideokinesis <\/em>became associated with Todd\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n

Since the original edition of The Thinking Body<\/em> became part of the \u201cpublic domain,\u201d several companies have satisfied the demand for the book by offering a variety of reprints.\u00a0 In 2021, as part of the educational mission of The Thinking Body Institute, TBI Media developed a meticulous reproduction of Todd\u2019s classic text with features that are not found in other editions, including:<\/p>\n
