This publication investigates the interplay between dance and the visual arts in relation to one of the key works of the 20th century, Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring). Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre was premiered in 1913 by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Champs Elys\u00e9es in Paris, and to this day it is considered the most controversial theatrical presentation of the 20th century. With its revolutionary music and choreography, the piece can be seen as one of modernism’s groundbreaking moments. The ballet (in which a virgin sacrifices herself for the god of spring and dances herself to death) still fascinates visual artists today and is the most choreographed ballet ever. Exploring the ballet, its context, and its history in a wide variety of ways, this anthology also includes a rare selection of Le Sacre dance documentation.<\/p>\n

Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the Migros Museum f\u00fcr Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, from February to May 2014.<\/p>\n

Mit dem Ausstellungsprojekt ‘Sacr\u00e9 101’ verfolgt das Migros Museum f\u00fcr Gegenwartskunst die Wechselwirkung von Tanz und bildender Kunst am Beispiel des Balletts Le Sacre du printemps. Vor hundertundein Jahren in der Choreografie von Vaslav Nijinsky in Paris uraufgef\u00fchrt, gilt es mit seiner revolution\u00e4ren Musik von Igor Strawinsky als einer der grossen Momente des Aufbruchs in die Moderne. Zur Ausstellung ist in Kooperation mit dem Zentrum f\u00fcr Bewegungsforschung an der Freien Universit\u00e4t Berlin \/ Gabriele Brandstetter die Publikation ‘Sacr\u00e9 101. An Anthology on \u2039The Rite of Spring\u203a’ erschienen, die Beitr\u00e4ge von Gabriele Brandstetter, Lynn Garafola, Nicola Gess, Raphael Gygax und Sigrid Weigel enth\u00e4lt.<\/p>\n
