Encounter #36 Jean Masse

Thursday November 12th, at 7p.m.
Around Karin Waehner’s archives
with Jean Masse, dancer, choreographer, teacher

A disciple of Karin Waehner (1926-1999), Jean Masse is also the heirs to her archives. As part of the celebration for the 100th anniversary of the dancer, choreographer and teacher’s birth, Books on the Move invites Jean Masse to come and talk about the wish to preserver her memory through archives (documents, photos, letters…) and anecdotes.

We will look at  documents that she kept at Scola Cantorum, in Paris, where she taught for over thirty years, but also about her own library and the way she organised it.

French, of German descent, Karin Waehner, is considered as one of the pioneers of modern dance in France. A student of Mary Wigman from 1946 to 1949 in Leipzig and in Berlin, she embraced German expressionist style that would come to define her entire body of work as a choreographer and teacher.

Jean Masse is the co-founder with Jacques Garros of Centre Lafaurie, a training and educational center open to professional and non-professionals for over  fifty years. Since 1974, he created numerous pieces with Compagnie Epiphane.
